Chinatown MRT Station

Singapore’s Chinatown MRT Station is a terminal station of the Downtown Line and a transit station of the North East Line. This station is a very popular station for locals and tourists. The station is located right in the centre of Singapore's chinatown. Chinatown covers an area of at least three square kilometres and comprises a few streets and many sidelanes. It is an explorer's paradise.

Chinatown MRT Station is also located close to several of Singapore's iconic tourist attractions. You can go to Clark Quay station, a wonderful riverside attraction with a wide range of restaurants, pubs and street markets. Two train stops away and you could be in Harbourfront station for more shopping and a visit to Universal Studios across the bay at Sentosa Island. Or drop by at the Bayfront MRT Station and shop at one of the biggest malls and entertainment complex in Singapore and visit a resort at the same time. There are more than 100 MRT stations in Singapore currently, serving in 4 lines, namely, the North South Line, the North East Line, the East West Line and the Circle Line. Many MRT stations, in particular the interchange stations, are connected to huge shopping malls where commuters arriving by SMRT trains can walk right in and shop, dine or entertain. These MRT stations-linked shopping malls are very popular with residents and shoppers. An outing to these stations is now a shopping destination for many Singapore residents.

Shopping at Chinatown

MRT Tip:
The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is the most convenient way to get around Singapore, aside from taxis. It also provides a very comfortable ride to the island's heartland and city places, with excellent accessibility and connectivity to virtually all districts of Singapore.

A big draw of Chinatown is the amalgamation of old, ancient, new and modern shopping options - a real sensual feast of Asian culture for the eyes. Tourists love this district as it represents the unique Singapore with its quaint but picturesque two and three storey shophouses, narrow streets lined with retail stores, busy sidewalks and an atmosphere that makes the whole area so vibrant and exciting, day and night. There are many restaurants in the shophouses and shopping malls. Opportunities for alfresco dining abound. There is also an open air foodcourt right at the heart of the shophouses with many local delicious and inexpensive food like chicken rice, noodles, satay, tim sum, laksa, home-styled cooked food, and more. For tourists, there are several facilities for changing foreign currency. Merchandise that are quaint and representative of this bustling island can be found in Chinatown. There is Sago Lane, full of history, where is a row of the infamous death houses. In the old days, the dead are brought here for religious rituals before burial. The same premises are now converted into retail boutiques by their tenants.

There are several shopping malls located here in Chinatown - Chinatown Point, People's Park Complex, People's Park Centre. You can spend the entire day here browsing the shops and streets. Savour the local delicacies and food when you need a rest. Don't forget to bring your camera. You want to bring back home memories of your visit to Chinatown.
